With a record number of students from India enrolling to study medicine in China, the countrys education ministry has authorised only 45 of the local medical colleges from among over 200 to enroll foreign students to teach MBBS in English.
Chinese universities have witnessed enrollment of a record number of Indian students to study medicine. China attracts foreign students, specially from India and other Asian countries, due to its affordable courses compared to institutions in the US, the UK and Australia.
At present over 23,000 Indian students are studying different courses in Chinese universities, as against over 28,000 from Pakistan. In all, nearly 5 lakh foreign students are presently studying in Chinese universities.
Of the 23,000 Indian students, over 21,000 have enrolled to study MBBS, which is an all-time high.
Considering the growing interest among Indian students about Chinese medical courses, the Indian Embassy here on Monday said the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved 45 medical colleges in the country to teach MBBS course in English to foreign students.
The Chinese MOE has also clarified that universities which are not in the list of the 45 universities should not admit foreign students for the MBBS programme to be taught in English, a press release issued by the Indian Embassy said.
"It has been clearly mentioned by the Chinese MOE that teaching MBBS course under a bilingual (English/Chinese) model is strictly forbidden. The MOE has also informed that the list of universities will be regularly reviewed and updated in due course," it said.
"The Chinese MOE has also stressed in its notification that universities which are not in this list of 45 universities can only recruit foreign students for medicine course in Chinese language," it said.
"The embassy is, however, not aware of any comprehensive list of universities that may have been authorised to offer medicine courses in Chinese for foreign students. We will continue to make efforts with the Chinese MOE to obtain such a list, if it exists," it said.
The Chinese MOE has not issued any other specific lists of universities relevant for the teaching of medicine.
Accordingly, the more than 200 universities which cannot teach MBBS course to foreign students was removed from the website of the Indian Embassy to prevent any confusion, the press release said.
Besides the 45 colleges, Indian and other foreign students were enrolled for years into the 200-odd colleges. They will continue to study in English/Chinese languages. Now the new rule applies to new recruits in the 45 selected colleges to study MBBS in English language.
Though Chinese universities rushed to enrol foreign medical students, specially India, they have struggled to hire quality professors to teach in English.PTI
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has decided to ban wrist watch and ornaments in examination halls. This rule will be applicable for all exams, including MBBS exams, conducted by the university. The colleges will be directed to strictly implement the rule from next examination onwards.
The new decision was taken after mass cheating was detected in the exams conducted by medical colleges recently. The University Exam Board recommended measures to prevent hi-tech methods for cheating in exams in the backdrop of University College exam cheating incidents.
When CCTV visuals from exam halls were checked, cheating was detected in six colleges including the government medical colleges in Alappuzha and Ernakulam, and four self-financing medical colleges Thiruvananthapuram SUT Medical College, Varkala SR Medical College, Kollam Azeezia Medical College and Perinthalmanna MES Medical College.
In the visuals, students can be seen discussing answers with each other and copying during exam. The university has decided to seek explanation from the identified students and take action against them.
Earlier, some students were held by college authorities for writing exams with the help of Bluetooth devices. Some other students complained that the university does not check CCTV footage from exam halls of all colleges. The authorities cited shortage of staff as reason for this.
Recommendations of university
College authorities should set up clock in exam halls.
Instrument box, big chains, bangles, ring and other ornaments will not be allowed in the hall.
Only ballpoint pens will be allowed. If possible, college authorities should supply pens.
Water bottle brought by students will not be allowed in exam halls.
Though body checking is recommended, it may not be implemented at present.
Entries have been invited under the 'AWSAR' Programme of the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) Division, actively engaged in developing various outreach programs for scientific fraternity, functioning under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
'Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research' (AWSAR) is an initiative that aims to disseminate Indian research stories among the masses in an easy to understand and interesting format to a common man. Under this initiative, PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) in Science and Technology (S&T) streams would be encouraged to write at least one popular science article during the tenancy of their fellowship, and to participate in a national competition.
AWSAR envisage to bridge the existing gap in communicating research to common man by utilizing the latent potential of PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs). The program is being coordinated by VigyanPrasar, an autonomous institute of DST.
AWSAR aims to (i) Encourage youth pursuing higher studies to submit at least one story/article based on their research work (ii) Foster, strengthen and create scientific temper through popular science writing and creating a culture of science communication/popularisation among the scholars (iii) Recognize the initiative and output of researchers on the specific aspects of Natural, Physical, Mathematical and Information sciences, Applied science, Technology, Engineering, and Multi-disciplinary science (iv) Conduct training Workshops for Early Career Researchers (PhD Scholars and PDFs) in popular science writing.
Under AWSAR, research scholars and Post Doctoral Fellows, who wish to publish their research in way that would interest non-scientific audiences, can submit entries which should be in the form of a story. The article must be based on the research undertaken by the individual researcher. The article could be on complete or part of the research conducted, but it should not be a general review of the area and must have the component of novel knowledge generated as part of the research. The article must aim at general audience through popular writing and should not be published elsewhere. It should be written in easy to understand language to convey the significance of the research for its outreach.
Eligibility: Applicants must be Indian citizens, pursuing PhD in Science &Technology and Post Doc fellows from a recognized University/R&D Institute. Applicants can only submit single article. Re-application by applicants from previous years is encouraged, as long as the eligibility criteria continue to be met. However, past winners of the Award will not be eligible to submit a research story second time in the same category.

Selection Criteria: The entries will be judged on the basis of accuracy, clarity, insightfulness, fairness, and resourcefulness. An Expert Panel of science communicators, media persons, subject experts and practitioners, constituted by DST, will evaluate the submitted science stories.
Award categories: For PhD researchers, the initial screening of the entry will be done by Expert Panel. 100 entries will be selected and each will be awarded with cash prize of 10,000/- along with Certificate of Appreciation. For Post doc fellows, 20 entries would be selected from articles submitted by PDFs relating to their line of research. Each will be awarded with cash prize of 10,000/- along with Certificate of Appreciation.
