Nilambur: Suresh, a teacher at the GovernmentManavedanVocational Higher Secondary School in Nilambur, has introduced the Class 9 Physics text book in the form of short stories. The textbook is mainly in the form of reaching conclusions through experiments. This created issues to a visually impaired student in the class. This led to the search for an alternative way to teach Physics which later ended in short stories.
All the stories are relating to daily life. The book based on such an idea that blindness is never a hindrance to imagination. This book will be useful for the students who find Physics as a difficult subject.
The book offers a QR code (which can be felt by touching) which can be scanned using mobile phones to hear the audio version of the stories.
The Archimedes principle, Newton's Laws and all other concepts are introduced to students in the form of stories. All the stories are inspired from life events of the teacher since childhood. The lessons included in first part text book of Class 9 are written in form of short stories in the book.
The book is dedicated as a gift to differently-abled students on the International Day of Disabled Persons 2019, December 3. The book was released by Head Master Abdul Nassar and Principal Anitha Abraham.
Oncepermission is obtained from the government, the book will be made available for free in all schools for blind children, said Suresh.

Fellowships: Indian and Foreign students admitted to the program shall receive the RCB-Ramachandran-DBT fellowship of Rs. 16000 per month for the first 2 years of the program, after which the Indian students shall be required to qualify for the junior/senior research fellowships offered by CSIR, ICMR, DBT, or other such funding agencies. The performance of the foreign students, after completion of their MSc component of the program, shall be evaluated by the Student Advisory Committee and based on its positive recommendation the student shall be awarded the RCB-DBT International Doctoral fellowship equivalent to the fellowships offered to Indian students from different funding agencies as per the relevant DST guidelines. Currently, the amount of the Junior Research Fellowship is Rs. 31000 per month and it is Rs. 35000 per month for the Senior Research Fellowship.

The Scholarships are given to Post Graduate (Second year), M.Phil and PhD students of Colleges affiliated to theUniversities in Kerala and those studying in the Teaching Departments under the Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi, Calicut, Kannur Universities, Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University.
The Scholarships are being awarded for engaging in a Project work/Internship of short duration. Those selected would get a scholarship of Rs.8000/- per month if the internship is within Kerala and Rs.10000/- for internships outside the state, for a period of 1 month for PG, 2 months for M.Phil and 4 months for PhD. The award will be made in two instalments, the first being at the time of joining and the second after the report is uploaded on completion of the Project work/Internship.
Applicant should be studying in the second year of the Post Graduate course or should be a student of MPhil or Phd in an affiliated Government/Aided College or in a teaching Department of the 6 Universities identified, during the academic year 2019-20. Applicant should be enrolled in a Government/Aided course and should have obtained minimum of 75% attendance in the first year of the course. They should have secured at least 55% marks in the qualifying course (Degree/Post Graduation). Applicant should have an account in his/her name, in a Nationalized/Commercial/Scheduled Bank having an IFS Code, and the same should be live at the time of submission of the application. Applicant should obtain a letter of consent from the University approved Guide of the institution under whom; the Project/Internship is proposed to be conducted. A No-objection certificate has to be obtained from the Institution where the student is studying at present.

The application submitted will be examined by an expert panel and the list of student selected will be uploaded in the scholarship website www.dcescholarship.kerala.gov.in, within two weeks. Intimation will be given by e-mail and SMS to those selected and to the concerned institutions. The scholarship amount will be released through the bank account of the applicant on receipt of the report of Joining from the host institution after getting relieved from the parent institution.
Those selected have to complete the Internship/Project wok within the stipulated time period and submit the report on the same, failing which, the applicant will have to refund the entire amount received as scholarship, with interest. A copy of the report of the Project/Internship has to be submitted to the Director of Collegiate education also, within the stipulated time.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has invited applications for the Cognitive Science Joint Entrance Test (COGJET)-2020.
COGJET 2020 will be used as a selection criterion for admissions to MS/MSc programs in Cognitive Science at IIT Kanpur, Centre for Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences (CBCS) Allahabad, Chandigarh University, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Delhi, and Panjab University and the PhD program at IIT Kanpur.
Institutes participating in the COGJET exam will use the COGJET score of candidates, to shortlist them for selection to their respective programs. Thiruvananthapuram: General education director has issued an order stating that only three students should be seated on a bench while conducting the SSLC and Higher Secondary half-yearly examinations. Earlier Joint Director Examination had issued a circular stating that five students will be seated on a bench.
The new order has been issued in the wake of Mathrubhumi article titled 'Oru Benchil Anchuper: Pareeksha Pareekshanamavum' (Five in one bench: Exam will be an experiment) published in daily on December 3.
In the new order it is said that the arrangement should be such that a Class 10 student between two Plus One/Two students or a Plus One/Two student between two SSLC students.
If there are enough classrooms available in the school, SSLC and HSE examinations can be held separately. If so Plus One and Plus Two students should be seated alternately with three on a bench. In classrooms where SSLC exams are conducted only two should be seated on a bench, the order further said.
Thiruvananthapuram: The preliminary examination of Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) will be held on February 22, 2020. Exams for both papers will be conducted the same day.
The first session of the exam is based on General Studies Paper 1 and the second session is on General Studies Paper 2 and linguistic skills. Maximum score is 200. The time schedule will be announced later. A total of 5,76,243 people have applied in three streams for the OMR-based exam.
In the first stream in which candidates are directly appointed, 5,47,543 people have applied and in the second stream for non-gazetted employees, there are 26,950 applicants. In the third stream for gazetted officers, 1750 applicants will appear for exam.
PSC informed that the applications of the second and third stream candidates will be subjected to scrutiny. A common exam will be conducted for all three streams.
The applicants should confirm through their profile within December 25 that they will appear for the exam, otherwise the application will be rejected. Those who confirm their appearance can download admission tickets from the websites from February 7.
PSC also informed that action will be taken against those who do not appear for the exam even after confirming appearance and those who have no proper qualification. According to the notification of PSC, the questions of General Studies paper will be in English.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)- National Institute of Virology; has invited applications for admission to its Ph.D. Programme.
Applicants should be Indian citizens having consistently good academic record. Applicant should have a strong motivation to pursue research in Modern Biology leading to a Ph.D. degree.

This Scheme seeks to give assistance to young artistes of outstanding promise for advanced training within India in the field of
(i) Indian Classical Music: Classical Hindustani Music (Vocal and Instrumental) Classical Carnatic Music (Vocal & Instrumental etc.)
(ii) Indian Classical Dance/ Dance Music: Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Odissi Dance/ Music, Manipuri Dance/ Music, Thangta, Gaudiya Nritya, Chhau Dance/ Music, Sattriya dance

There are 400 scholarships available for the current near. The duration of scholarship will be two years. The nature of training will be determined in each case after taking into consideration the previous training and background of the scholar. Normally, it will be in the nature of advance training under a Guru/ Master or in a recognized institution. The scholar will be required to undergo a rigorous training. Such training will include minimum of three hours a day for practice alone apart from the time spent for acquiring knowledge of the theory of the subject/field concerned and also an appreciation of the related disciplines.
Each scholar will be paid Rs. 5000/- per month for a period of two years to cover his/ her living expenses on travelling, books, art material or other equipment and tuition or training charges, if any.
Eligibility: Applicants should be Indian Nationals and should not be less than 18 years and not more than 25 years as on 1 Apriln2019. They should have an adequate general education to pursue their training effectively and must give evidence of their desire to make the pursuit of their training effectively. Applicant must have already acquired a degree of proficiency in the chosen field, as the scholarships are meant for advanced training and not for beginners. Applicant should have undergone a minimum of 5 years training with their Guru/Institutes. The Certificate to this effect in Part II of the Proforma duly signed by the present Guru/Institute and former Guru/Institute (if any) should be submitted along with the application. Candidates should have an adequate knowledge in the connected arts/ disciplines.

Eligibility: For admission to the two programmes, applicant must hold a Bachelor's degree in any discipline or should possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% in case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA). Kozhikode: Any automation should have manual over-ride, said P J Narayanan, Director, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. The researcher in the areas of Computer Vision, computational cameras, and parallel computing was delivering a talk in UL Cyberpark on “Artificial Intelligence: Reality & Thoughts” jointly organised by Centre for Research and Education for Social Transformation, ULCCS and Calicut Management Association.
The professor cited the crashes of two Boeing aircrafts to substantiate his contention. Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS software, which is designed to help prevent the 737 Max from stalling repeatedly pushed the planes nose down, leaving pilots fighting for control. The tug of war between the craft and crew led to the crashes.
He expanded on the recent surge in AI research and products. The recent progress in several components of AI has indeed been impressive, though there is a wide divergence of views on where AI will lead humanity, ranging from technology replacing jobs and human lives to a dystopian world of singularity, - a moment which inventor-futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts will happen in 2045, when super intelligent machines transform humanity - with technology/AI becoming lord and master. The IIIT-H director also spoke on the need for AI-humanities multi-disciplinary approach, ethics in automation and privacy protocol.

P J Narayanan built the Virtualized Reality system in mid 1990s at the Carnegie Mellon University to capture 3D geometry and appearance of dynamic events. He also was an early adopter of GPUs for several Computer Vision and general computing tasks. He got his bachelors from IIT Kharagpur, masters and PhD from the University of Maryland, all in Computer Science. He was a research faculty member at the Robotics Institute of CMU from 1992 to 96 and headed the Vision and Virtual Reality groups of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Bengaluru from 1996 to 2000. He has been with IIIT Hyderabad from 2000 and has been its PG Coordinator, Dean of Research, and, from 2013, its Director.

Selection: Eligible applicants will be called for an objective type Online Computer Based Examination (OCBE) of 90 minutes duration likely to be held in April, 2020. On the basis of OCBE merit, candidates will be called for interview during May 2020. Final selection will be based on combined merit of OCBE & interview, subject to medical fitness.
Interview & Medical Examination: Merit listed candidates of Online Computer Based Examination will appear for interview & medical examination at selected centres. Candidates declared Fit/Unfit in medical examination will be informed about their medical status, including the procedure of requesting for Appeal/Review Medical Board by the President of the Selection Medical Board (SMB).
Test Centres: The candidates are required to choose the examination centre from the list of centres provided while filling the online application form. Allotment of centers will be on 'first apply-first allot' basis. If the number of candidates is inadequate/more than the capacity of a centre, the candidates opting for that centre will be allotted any other centre as per the administrative feasibility. No correspondence/requests regarding change of centre from any candidate will be accepted.

The selected candidates, if found not in possession of documents /mark sheets as per eligibility criteria, at the institution to which they report, the admission is liable to be cancelled. In such cases no TA will be applicable.
Candidates will be awarded admission in Colleges of Nursing based on the merit cum choice, subject to medical fitness and the vacancies in each College. The selected candidates shall execute an Agreement/Bond to serve in the Military Nursing Service. On successful completion of nursing training of 4 years, the candidates will be granted Permanent/Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service, under the terms and conditions laid down for grant of such commission. They shall have to refund the Bond money as per the Bond executed in the event of withdrawal from the Course, termination of training or refusal to accept Commission in the MNS, if offered. During training they will be provided with free ration, accommodation, uniform allowance and monthly stipend as per terms and conditions as amended from time to time.
Subsequent to passing the final year University examination for B Sc (Nursing) Course, the candidates will be offered Commission in the Military Nursing Service subject to medical fitness. The date of declaration of result from respective Universities will be the date of Commission for the candidates. The date of Commission determines the date of seniority in service among all candidates who have joined the Course in the same year.
